Adding Plants to your new Apartment

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK's tips for house plants

You have just moved into a new apartment, and you’ve decided to start growing some plants. Maybe you’re feeling intimidated because you’ve never had a green thumb or kept houseplants alive before.  Have no fear–we have some easy and fun tips for adding greenery to your new home sweet home.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK's tips for filling a new apartment with plantsFirst of all, we definitely applaud your decision to add some sprouts into your life! Plants bring so much color and vibrancy into small spaces. Not only do they make your room smell and look better; they also can provide other benefits, such as growing fresh herbs for your cooking needs, or growing fruits and veggies to munch on. Another huge benefit of growing plant in your small space is that they help sustain better air quality. Research has also shown that being close in proximity to green plants can help reduce stress.

Unfortunately, caring for plants can sometimes come at a high price and add to your anxiety level before you reap the benefits! Here are some points to check before you decide on the types of plants you purchase:

  • What kind of soil and and planters will they need?
  • How much water does this plant need and how often?
  • Where in the house would be a good spot for them to grow?

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK's tips for plants in your new apartmentIf you are a busy working person, sometimes it’s really hard to keep up with yourself, much less your new seedlings. We suggest starting off with some easy-to-maintain plants like succulents or cacti. These require very low maintenance and provide just the right amount of color for a small space.

If you’re on a tight budget, you may want to consider that certain planters and soil can be expensive as you continue to maintain your indoor oasis. Some great idea for cheap planters are used coffee or cookie tins, aluminum cans from canned veggies, pasta sauce jars, and even old baskets. You can also avoid spending money on expensive fertilizers by using natural waste that you would otherwise throw away, such as egg shells, used coffee grounds, and fruit peels.

Once you’ve selected the plants and supplies you want to add to your apartment, be sure to maintain consistent care of each plant. Try turning your plants by a few degrees each time you water them, so each side receives an equal amount of water and sunlight. When you have to go away for a long weekend, place a new, clean sponge filled with water at the base of the planter so it won’t become too dry as you are away.

Your “Moving Out” Checklist

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK's checklist for moving out of a house or apartment

Finding a new home is so exciting–it’s your chance to transform a new space into your familiar, cozy abode. But whether you’re selling your old home to a new family or just want to avoid paying a cleaning fee with your soon-to-be ex-landlord, it’s important to make sure you leave your old place spic and span. Here are some tips we’ve learned over our last two decades in business about moving out of a house or apartment:

1. Clean, clean, clean!

If regular cleaning wasn’t your strong suit in your old home, you’ll want to be sure to perform a deep clean on your space before handing your keys over to the new owner or landlord. And even if you did keep up with daily and weekly cleaning tasks, we have some great tips for adding some extra shine in overlooked and hard-to-reach places. Check out our previous blog post on cleaning your home with household objects you already have in your closet.

2. Make your walls look like new.

It’s almost impossible to keep your walls hole- and scuff-free in a place you’ve been living for several years. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to fill in nail and hook holes with wall putty from your local hardware store. Also, most scuff marks on your wall can usually be removed with a Magic Eraser product.

3. Check your exterior spaces.

You don’t want to accidentally leave mail in the mailbox or belongings in your garage or shed! Make sure you take all of your porch and patio furniture, and clean these exterior areas as you make last-minute checks. Remove any bugs from your lighting fixtures and sweep up storage spaces.

4. Take a final walk-through.

When you think you’re finally ready to leave for good, take a few minutes to walk through your home one last time. Check your closets and cabinets to ensure you haven’t left anything behind. Make sure you’ve taken out the trash and removed your cleaning products. Finally, if you’re leaving behind a rented space, take time-stamped photos of each room in case you need proof that you left the home in good order.
