Christmas in July Coat Drive

Christmas in July Coat Drive

We’re getting ready for our second annual Christmas in July Coat Drive! When Nashville starts to get chilly in the winter, many local parents aren’t able to afford new jackets to properly fit their children. A couple years ago, we decided we wanted to host a coat drive to specifically benefit the students at Park Avenue Elementary who are living in poverty. Unfortunately, coat drives usually take place in the middle of winter after the kids are already in need of clothing to keep them warm. So last July, we decided to host a “Christmas in July” coat drive to collect jackets, coats, and sweaters ahead of time to prepare Park Avenue ahead of the winter season.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK hosts the Christmas in July Coat DriveOur 2016 coat drive was so successful that we decided to make it an annual tradition! We hope you’ll keep supporting these local children in need by coming to this year’s Christmas in July celebration on July 8th from 9 am-11 am! Our goal is to fill a 16-foot moving truck with new and gently-used coats, jackets, and sweaters for these K through 4th grade students. We’ll be parked in front of the Nashville location of Thriftsmart on Nolensville Road to take your donations.

This year, everyone (18+ years old) can enter to win a pair of tickets to one of the Nashville Ballet‘s December performances of The Nutcracker! We’re so excited about this raffle prize, which is valued at $148 and really helps us get into the Christmas spirit.

And that’s not all! Thriftsmart has generously offered (again!) to give a voucher for 50% off your next purchase at their store to everyone who makes a donation! Plus, we’ll be making kid-friendly DIY crafts out of moving boxes so your child can bring home a keepsake from the event. We’ll also be joined by our friends at The BIG 98 for our party music and prizes for your family.

Help us fill our truck with coats for these students in need! If you have any questions, please call or text us at 615-248-6288!

Moving Moms Forward for Mother’s Day

Movers for Moms collects Mother's Day donations for Safe Haven Family Shelter

Happy (early) Mother’s Day to every mom in Nashville!  Every year, we like to celebrate our local moms who need a little extra support from their community through our Movers for Moms campaign.  During Movers for Moms, we collect donations for the moms living at Safe Haven Family Shelter.  These moms have escaped domestic violence, suffered a loss of a family member, lost their home due to a natural disaster, or have experienced some other unexpected tragedy that has left their family without a home.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Nashville's first annual Movers for Moms Festival benefiting Safe Haven Family ShelterThis year was our fourth year running the Movers for Moms drive locally.  In 2016, the Nashville community came together and helped us collect over 3,700 donations for these deserving mothers.  We decided to set our sights high this year and aim for at least 5,000 donations!

Throughout March and April, we set up Movers for Moms donation boxes all over town at places like iLoveKickboxing, Zeitlin Realtors & Co, and Hermitage Kindercare where everyone could drop off their gifts for Safe Haven mamas.  But we took it a step further and hosted our first annual Movers for Moms Festival on April 22nd to raise even more money and collect more necessities!  The festival celebrated every mom in Nashville with free facials from Mary Kay, fun games for the kids, and tons of giveaways from our other festival vendors.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK delivers the Movers for Moms donations to Safe Haven Family Shelter in NashvilleWe knew we could count on you to make Safe Haven’s moms feel special, loved, and supported on their big day.  But as always, Nashville over-delivered…  You helped us collect over 9,000 donations of clothing items, diapers, bed sheets, and other necessities for moms who are starting their lives over at Safe Haven!  Thank you so much for your generous contributions!  We can’t wait to see what next year’s Movers for Moms drive will bring.

In less than a month, we’ll be hosting our first ever Movers for Moms Festival at Dragon Park in Green Hills!  The event is free to attend, and takes place on April 22nd from 10 am-2 pm.  We hope you’ll bring the whole family to enjoy fun activities like:

Movers for Moms: Helping moms in need this Mother’s Day

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is helping moms in need at Safe Haven Family Shelter for Mother's Day

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK delivers the Movers for Moms donations at Safe Haven Family ShelterThis month, we’re officially kicking off our 4th annual Movers for Moms collection drive! Every year in honor of Mother’s Day, we collect essential care items for the moms in need at Safe Haven Family Shelter. Safe Haven is so important to our hearts because they are the only homeless shelter in the Middle Tennessee region which is equipped to accept whole families, instead of having to split them up among Men’s and Women’s & Children shelters. Last year, we collected over 3,800 donations for Safe Haven… This year our goal is to collect 5,000 donations by Mother’s Day!

We hope you’ll join us in helping this deserving moms by making a donation at one of 15 drop off boxes we have in different locations all over Nashville. Some of the donations we really need include:

  • Non-chemical cleaning products, like brooms and trash bags
  • Diapers and other baby products
  • Unused kitchen and cooking products
  • New linens and pillows for Full and Twin-sized beds
  • Toiletries and personal care items

Movers for Moms Festival will have lots of family friendly activities for the kidsWe also want to invite you to our first annual Movers for Moms Festival coming up on April 22nd at Dragon Park! Get ready to party with us during Art Activities with The Frist Center, Parachute Play with Gymboree, Storytime with local children’s book authors, and tons more! We’ll also have yummy snacks from King of Pops, Nut Butter Nation, and other local foodies. You can read all the festival details here.

Give back this holiday season…without even trying!

ways to give back this season without even trying

It may sound cheesy, but we really do our best to live by our slogan of “Movers Who Care”!  Every holiday season, we try to find ways to support the community by doing things we would do anyway…  We know we’re going to decorate Christmas trees and buy gifts for our loved ones, so why not help local non-profits at the same time?  This year, we decided to fill you in on the top five ways we’ll be giving back to those in need so you can get some inspiration for your own holiday activities!

Buy your Christmas tree…and help single moms in need.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK can move your furniture to make room for holiday directionsIt’s pretty much required this time of year to pick out a Christmas tree with your kids, then decorate as a family while you snack on cookies and sing Christmas tunes.  Instead of going out to a normal Christmas tree farm this year, pick out your tree with Nashville Giving Tree!  This awesome non-profit has found a way to make sure 100% of the sales from these trees benefit young, single moms in Nashville who are still working on obtaining their high school diploma.  By working with farmers, trucking companies, and local businesses, every penny goes back to the ones who really need it.

Decorate your tree…and pay for children’s cancer treatments.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK sponsors the St Jude Radiothon on The Big 98One of our favorite non-profit partners is the St Jude Research Hospital, which offers free treatment, free meals, free EVERYTHING to families whose children are suffering from cancer.  We are honored to sponsor their radio-thon every year on the Big 98 radio station.  We also love ordering new Christmas ornaments through their online gift shop!  Not only do the sales of these ornaments benefit their patients, but they were also designed by the children who are being treated at the hospital!

Send holiday cards…and support retired seniors.

Our company is dedicated to supporting Nashville seniors, and we actually partnered with local non-profits and senior communities to develop the county’s very first Senior Sensitivity Training for movers.  One of those non-profits is FiftyForward, and we still do all we can to support their mission of eliminating isolation and depression among retired seniors in Middle Tennessee.  When you’re ready to buy holiday cards to send to your loved ones, consider purchasing handmade cards from the “Card Crusaders” club at the FiftyForward Martin Center!  All profits from card sales go back to the non-profit, and every card is made by their clients.  They even have a holiday card special going on right now, where you can get a discount for purchasing more than 24 cards.

Make your holiday dinner…and earn cash for your favorite local charity.

If you have a Kroger rewards card, you can make sure every grocery run earns money to be donated to the local school, church, or non-profit organization of your choice through their awesome Community Rewards program.  All you have to do is log into your Kroger account online, go to your Account Settings page, and enroll in the Community Rewards on behalf of your preferred organization.  While not every school, church, and local non-profit has chosen to be a partner of Kroger’s program, you can support almost any worthy cause you desire!

Get gifts for the kids…and benefit young hospital patients.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Nashville supports the Monroe Carrel Jr Childrens Hospital at VanderbiltWe absolutely love the local Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, which treats hundreds of thousands of children every year for everything from common colds to cancer.  In fact, we also sponsor their annual radio-thon on The River radio station every year!  This season, when you purchase Kohl’s Cares books and stuffed animals, all profits benefit children being treated at Vanderbilt.  To make sure your purchase benefits our local hospital, be sure to pick up your order from your local Kohl’s store, either through online ordering + in-store pickup or during your next visit to Kohl’s.

Get gifts for your friends…and help low-income families buy homes.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK donated free moves to the Habitat for Humanity Women Build 2015A little known fact about Habitat for Humanity is that they don’t simply give away homes to the homeless–they actually require eligible low-income families to purchase Habitat homes with a zero-interest loan, and only after they complete mandatory financial classes and sweat equity.  We support Habitat by donating free moving services to their largest families in need!  And this holiday season, you can help their families too, by purchasing home goods and decor gifts for your friends at the Habitat ReStore.  The ReStore sells furniture and decor items which were overstocked retail merchandise, slightly damaged retail merchandise, or gently used donations from the community at bargains you can’t resist.  All sales directly benefit the Habitat mission!

Get gifts for that person who has everything…and support volunteerism.

Although many people know they’re passionate about certain causes, such as animal rights or homelessness, it can be difficult to know how to find a good way to get involved.  To help spread awareness about various non-profit opportunities, Doing Good TV documents the efforts and positive change of different volunteer efforts around America.  We love donating free moves to Doing Good, and you can donate to them too this holiday season by purchasing a ZapCard! The ZapCard offers over 3,000 digital coupons (accessible by smartphone) to popular stores such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Macy’s, Hertz, and Walmart.  Perfect for your friend who already owns everything, and over 50% of the sales support Doing Good!

Buy your gifts from Amazon…and donate to your favorite local charity.

Amazon Smile lets you buy Christmas presents while donating part of your purchase to your favorite Nashville charity. Here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Nashville, we are huge Amazon fans.  If you have an Amazon account that you use regularly, you can have a percentage of every purchase you make benefit the charity of your choice!  Simply go to your Amazon Smile account preferences and set the charity you would like to benefit.  When you’re ready to start filling up your online cart, just make sure you visit smile.amazon.com instead of the normal amazon.com homepage to find the items you want to purchase.

Happy shopping, Nashville!  When you’re ready to haul your tree or new furniture home, be sure to give us a call, text, or email for a free moving quote!

No Shave November

No Shave November at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK

Happy No Shave November, or “Movember” if that’s what you call it! We’ve been excited for No Shave November to finally arrive, and now that it has, we started asking ourselves why men stop shaving for a full month in the fall. Did you know the point of No Shave November is to raise awareness about prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer can be a pretty awkward topic to talk about, but it’s really important for men to understand how commonly the disease is found. About 1 in 6 men will someday have prostate cancer, and an estimated 80% of men over the age of 80 have the cancer cells in their prostate. So in November, men can grow their beards long and wild as a conversation starter to raise awareness about the risks and importance of researching this common form of cancer.

So how can you get involved in this kooky awareness campaign? The No Shave November Foundation encourages men to donate the amount of money they would have spent on shaving/grooming products during the month to prostate cancer research instead of maintaining their facial hair. However, you can decide what works best with your lifestyle, office dress code, and financial resources to participate in any way you feel appropriate!

If you need some inspiration, this is how we’re celebrating No Shave November:

Part One

No Shave November--our BEFORE pictures! Our male office staff members are putting down the razor for all 30 days of November! (We can’t wait to see the patches and burliness of their beards by the end of the month!) Whenever we’re asked why our staff looks so unkempt this month, we can start a conversation about the No Shave November cause. At the end of the month, we’ll vote to decide whose beard is the manliest, hunkiest, or just plain funniest, and that man will win a facial grooming kit!

Part Two

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK in Nashville is donating free moving services to Gilda's Club to celebrate No Shave NovemberWe also want to get involved in the support of cancer patients this month! So we’re donating a free move to the local non-profit Gilda’s Club, which is Nashville’s local affiliate of the Cancer Support Community. Gilda’s Club has a half marathon coming up this weekend on Saturday, November 12th, and we’re donating our moving services to help transport the marathon materials. If you love running or walking, be sure to sign up to support this great cause!

Get creative this month to help raise awareness about the risk and research of prostate cancer! And if you would like more information about our involvement in No Shave November, or just about our moving services in general, please give us a call/text at 615-248-6288 or visit our website!

How Movers for Mutts helped the Nashville Humane Association this year

The final results of Nashville's 2016 Movers for Mutts Drive benefiting Nashville Humane Association

Here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, the vast majority of our employees have pets that they consider important parts of their family.  Unfortunately, in Middle Tennessee, there are so many pets living on the streets, without a permanent home.  In this 2015 report by the Nashville Scene, we learned that approximately 8,000 pets enter Nashville’s Metro animal shelter each year… and this figure doesn’t even include the dogs and cats who enter other non-government shelters, such as the Nashville Humane Association.

Marketer Christian with a dog from Nashville Humane AssociationMany of our employees have rescued their pets from the NHA and feel a special connection to the agency.  But we love supporting the NHA not only because they facilitate adoptions of dogs and cats in Greater Nashville; they also spread awareness about the need to spay and neuter pets to avoid adding to the homeless pet population.  So we decided to continue our annual Movers for Mutts collection drive to provide necessary pet items to Nashville Humane Association this fall.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK hosted a free Doga class to raise money for the Nashville Humane AssociationThis year, we hosted dog-friendly events, design and coloring contests, and, of course, a donation drive to support the NHA.  With fun activities like “doga” (dog-friendly yoga), a doggy photo booth, and festivals, we were able to support animals in need while having fun with the community.  At the end of it all, we collected over 10,400 donations, including wish list items from the NHA website and monetary contributions, for the shelter.

Thank you so much for helping us support the Nashville Humane Association this year!  We hope you’ll check back next summer for details about our next Movers for Mutts drive!

How to DIY a Snoopy Doghouse

How to make a Snoopy Doghouse out of moving boxes

Here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Nashville, we’re all about a fun DIY craft!  We especially love making crafts out of used moving boxes that we would otherwise have to throw away.  This time, we took inspiration from our Movers for Mutts charity campaign and made a Snoopy Doghouse.  Here’s how we did it:

Supplies

  • Two moving boxes (we used a Large and a Medium, but you can use whichever sizes you have available)
  • Packing tape
  • Black marker
  • Exacto-style knife*
  • Red spray paint*

*For these last two supplies, make sure to have an adult supervising children who make this craft!

Step 1 for building a Snoopy doghouse out of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving boxesStep 1: Cut out Snoopy’s doorway.

For this step, you’ll want to keep your box flattened on the floor to make tracing and cutting easy.  Pick one of the smaller sides of your box to be the “front” of the doghouse, and trace your arched doorway with a pencil.  Then use your crafting knife to cut the shape out.

Step 2: Cut a roof-shaped point in the front and back box flaps.

This step will also be easier if you leave your box flattened on the floor for now.  Using a yard stick or the edge of your second box, draw two diagonal lines starting from the bottom outer corners of each flap, ending at the midpoint of the top of the flap.  Then use your crafting knife to cut through these lines.

Step 3: Fold up Snoopy’s doghouse.

Now you’re ready to get the basic shape of your doghouse!  Fold up the bottom flaps and secure the edges with tape to hold them down.  These will make up the “floor” of the doghouse.  Next, tape the edges of your top flaps together.  Your doghouse should look nearly complete, and just a teeny bit leaky on top.

Step 4 of making a Snoopy Doghouse out of a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving boxStep 4: Make a roof with your second box.

Look at all sides of your second box, and decide which of the four side folds you’d like to serve as the top point of your roof.  Then use your crafting knife to cut off the non-adjacent sides of the box.  Fold and set the remaining two sides over your doghouse box to get an idea of what your roof will look like.  When we got to this step, we noticed that the roof was going to be much longer than we wanted, so we cut a few inches off the end.  Adjust your roof, too, to make it the size you want!

Step 5: Decorate!

The final productNow for the really fun part!  To decorate our Snoopy doghouse, we spray painted the outside walls and roof piece separately.  Then we used a permanent marker to add the “siding” and “roof slats,” and of course wrote in Snoopy’s name.  After all the coloring was done, we taped the roof piece down to the top to keep everything nice and secure.

That’s all!  This easy craft took us about two days to complete, just because we wanted to let paint completely dry between adding layers.  You can come see our Snoopy doghouse at the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Nashville booth at the upcoming Dog Day Festival on September 17th!  And to take some free, cute photos of your pooch next to (or inside!) our masterpiece, just bring a donation for our Movers for Mutts charity collection.
