Although Nashville is known as one of America’s most pet-friendly cities, there are still hundreds of homeless pets living in the Nashville Humane Association each year, just waiting to find their forever home.  At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, we host an annual Movers for Mutts charity to collect needed supplies and donations for this amazing pet shelter! This year, we’ve decided to take advantage of our city’s natural creativity and artistry to host our first ever photo and video contest, where all the entry fee donations will benefit the NHA.

Spay and neutering services can come at a very steep price, and adoption fees can also be a barrier to animals needing a forever home. We love supporting the NHA because they offer resources for pet owners to find affordable veterinary care for their fur babies, as well as regular discounts on their adoption fees. In their adoption cost, they include all mandatory vaccinations (such as the rabies vaccine) and spay/neuter services for pets who are old enough to receive them so you don’t have to worry about the veterinary costs piling up immediately.

How to Buy a House in Nashville’s Crazy Market

Nashville’s real estate market is so hot right now that many buyers are feeling overwhelmed about the prospect of losing their potential dream home to another bidder who is quicker and has more money than they do. But even though we’re fully equipped to help you move into your new home, we aren’t experts at helping you find it.

How to Win in a Multiple Offer Situation (It Isn’t ALWAYS Offer Price)

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Nashville first time home buyersNashville is a sellers’ market and it’s hard for buyers to win these days. For the past several years, the Nashville market has seen unprecedented growth, and as everyone has heard by now, the number of people moving to town does not match the amount of housing available in the price ranges needed. The most competitive area is what is considered the “first time home buyers’ market,” which is typically $150-$300k.  Most homes at this price point which are located in an established neighborhood and in good condition will go into a multiple offer situation.

So what does that mean, and how does it affect my bid?

In multiple offers, the seller will need to evaluate each offer, and either set a deadline to review all of the offers at once, or take a “first come first served” approach. The former option is more common, as it allows more buyers time to view the property and submit an offer by a set deadline. When you are submitting a bid in this situation, the agent will tell prospective buyers and/or their agents to bring their “highest and best” by the deadline. That means, for a house listed at $160k, if you really want to offer $175k, but you actually submit an offer for $160k to see if you can negotiate, you might not get the opportunity to negotiate. A seller can only counter one offer at a time, so they will either accept or counter the best offer they have in hand, while the rest of the offers may well expire by the end of the day, making them null and void.

But what if I can’t offer much over the asking price?

There are several tactics you can use to make your offer more appealing to sellers without having to go above your budget.

Always make sure your agent is asking what is important to the seller. Align closing dates with the seller’s needs if possible. Does the seller want a quick close, or do they need more time? Make your offer match what the seller has indicated they want as best as you are able. Sometimes the seller may need to stay in the home 30 days after closing and rent back from the buyer. That might be more important to them than money over the asking price.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK home buying tipsOther times, the seller won’t have time to make repairs, and an “as-is” offer with a pass/fail inspection contingency may make your bid shine. People who are handy can often benefit from agreeing to do repairs themselves instead of asking the seller to do them. I would NEVER suggest anyone buy a home without a professional inspection, but if the repairs required are minor and not of significant cost, this method can be a winning strategy. By completing an inspection, you can discover if there are major costly issues that will exceed your budget, so you do have the opportunity to terminate the contract and get a refund of your earnest money if you find out about the costly problems before the end of the inspection deadline.

What else can I do to look better in a multiple offer situation?

It’s not fair, but having a conventional loan is pretty important in these scenarios. Cash is king to sellers, but let’s be realistic–most buyers need financing, and conventional loans are second best to a cash offer. Government assisted loans like FHA, VA, THDA and USDA loans are a wonderful resource for first-time buyers and those without much cash for a down payment, but they take longer to close, and often require the seller to make repairs. Sadly, offers with this type of financing are usually moved to the bottom of the pile. This doesn’t mean you can’t utilize this type of financing to buy a home; it’s just not the best choice in a multiple offer situation. However, new construction lends itself well to these loans because they are less likely to need repairs!

Don’t ask for closing costs. If you can afford to pay your own closing costs, plan to do so in multiple offer situations. I’ve seen sellers turn down a higher offer from a buyer who asked the seller to cover closing costs in favor of a lower offer from a buyer who could pay for their own closing. Perhaps the sellers are worried the house won’t appraise, and if they have to lower the price, plus pay closing costs in addition to the lower offer, the seller can lose a lot of money.

I know it sounds cheesy and corny, but when the seller narrows it down to the three best offers, and one person has written about how great the home is and the life they want to build there…the personal note can put a buyer over the edge of the competition. Selling the home can be very emotional for a homeowner, and they feel better knowing it is getting passed on to someone who loves it as much as they did.

In the end, the best offer lines up with what is important to the seller. 

The key takeaway here is, if you only have $x dollars over asking price to play with, putting that money towards an extra month of rent, repairs, closing costs, or title might be more appealing than just cash on top of the list price. Creativity can win!

Garage Sale Day: Maximize Your Money!

It’s no wonder National Garage Sale Day is coming up on August 12… It’s the perfect time of year to purge your unneeded belongings! You can clean house before your upcoming move, or just to make your home feel more spacious as the kids start to need their study spaces back. Unfortunately, garage sales often add up to a LOT of prep work with minimal pay off. Here are our top tips to hosting a profitable garage sale:

Time is Money

It’s easy to get bogged down by all the things you COULD do before your sale, such as individually pricing every single item with price stickers or hand making dozens of giant neon signs for the roadways. But some of these planning activities just aren’t worth your time!

When it comes to labeling items, consider the option of only pricing a few big ticket items and leaving the rest without tags. Usually, you have an idea of what each item is worth to you anyway…but you don’t really know what it will be worth to shoppers. If you don’t put a price on anything, you allow the buyer to come to you with a price that may be even higher than what you would have asked. It also gives you room to negotiate. And for small trinkets that will take forever to organize, you can set up a designated “Everything is $1” table at the corner of your sale.

Instead, invest in an inexpensive single clothing rack, or tie up some clothing line between two trees in your yard. This system also helps your customers peruse clothing more quickly and feel as if they’re in a store-like atmosphere.

Finally, you can also save some time by purchasing smaller neon posters as opposed to the big ones that require you to fill several square feet of space. Not only are the small posters just as eye-catching, but the larger posters are more difficult to secure and can flap around in the wind so drivers are unable to read them as they pass by.

Have a Party

One way to draw a larger crowd to your sale is by creating a larger sale. Invite your friends to join in your sale with their goods as well, and you’ll look twice as impressive to passersby! Drivers will be more likely to stop when they know they’ll have a wider selection to browse.

You should also keep some upbeat background music on to eliminate the awkward silence that sometimes comes with garage sales. The music will let your shoppers know they’re welcome to browse at a leisurely pace, which gives them more time to fall in love with more of your stuff.

Hang some balloons from  your mailbox and porch rail to catch attention, and even hang some streamers around in a festive way. Cover your sales tables with those $1 disposable table cloths to help items stand out from the tables and look more approachable.

Run Your Sale Like a Store

When you go shopping, do you want to dig through piles of random items, or would you rather see items spread across the table neatly? Would you have the patience to kneel down and dig through a box on the ground, or would you prefer to see the contents laid out on a table top?

Try to set up your sales tables in aisles, like you would find at a thrift store. Have each table dedicated to specific categories of items, and order the aisles based on similar categories. For example, if your first table is full of kitchen items, it would make most sense to put bathroom or bedroom items next to it, rather than yard tools and auto parts.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Nashville's tips to a garage saleIn fact, you may want to set the yard tools, auto parts, and electronics of your sale closer to the sidewalk than everything else. Most boyfriends and husbands like to linger in the car or at the sidewalk as their significant others shop. But if you can catch their attention with items they enjoy shopping for, you may be able to double your clientele!

You should also set aside some time to clearly label the sizes of the clothing you sell, and then organize it in order by size and season on your rack. Customers may give up easily if they have to search through clothing that isn’t organized in any fashion, but if they know your system, they can skip to the section they need. If you’re selling accessories and jewelry, set these items up at a table next to the clothing and make sure each piece is easy to see. A pile of mismatched jewelry can be intimidating, but you can use jewelry stands, drawer organizers, or a foam board with pins to create a more visually appealing sales station.

Encourage People to Take, Take, Take

The point of your garage sale is not just to make money, but also to get rid of this stuff you don’t need anymore! There are plenty of ways you can silently push people toward buying more than they originally planned.

First, make sure you have bags on hand. If someone walking their dog stops by your sale, they’re limited in what they can buy without a bag to hold their purchases in. So for a few weeks leading up to your sale, save up your grocery and convenience store bags to re-use with your customers.

You may even want to have a “bag deal,” especially near the end of your sale. Tell your customers that when they pay $5 or $10 for a bag, they can take as many items as they can fit inside of it. This way, your customers feel like they’re getting an awesome deal while you continue to unload the junk.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Nashville's tips for hosting a garage saleNext, remember your big ticket items can make the most money, but only if you can convince someone to go through the hassle of making space in their car to take them off your hands. (Pro Tip: Give us a call to move those belongings for them!) Before the sale begins, make sure you clean those bigger pieces of furniture up nicely so people can picture them in their home without having to mentally peel back the dust and cobwebs first. You can make those items even more enticing by offering to “throw in” something free if a buyer purchases them. For example, if someone agrees to buy your couch, throw in that cozy-looking blanket you’re selling at the home goods table. Or if they want to buy your son’s old bedroom desk, go ahead and throw in the pen organizer for free.

Also, don’t forget to have plenty of every form of change you may need. You don’t want to lose a sale because you ran out of one dollar bills too early! Keep your change in a fanny pack or apron so it’s close to you at all times and easy to access.

Finally, when you only have an hour left in the sale, put up some “50% off EVERYTHING!” signs to really encourage people to take the items they were possibly on the fence about. You may not love the idea of cutting your potential revenue in half, but think about it this way… You won’t make any money if you put those items back in your garage, and you’ll be saving a trip to the thrift store.

When the Sale is Over

You have just moved into a new apartment, and you’ve decided to start growing some plants. Maybe you’re feeling intimidated because you’ve never had a green thumb or kept houseplants alive before.  Have no fear–we have some easy and fun tips for adding greenery to your new home sweet home.

Plants bring so much color and vibrancy into small spaces. Not only do they make your room smell and look better; they also can provide other benefits, such as growing fresh herbs for your cooking needs, or growing fruits and veggies to munch on. ​Another huge benefit of growing plant in your small space is that they help sustain better air quality. Research has also shown that being close in proximity to green plants can help reduce stress.

Unfortunately, caring for plants can sometimes come at a high price and add to your anxiety level before you reap the benefits! Here are some points to check before you decide on the types of plants you purchase:

  • What kind of soil and and planters will they need?
  • How much water does this plant need and how often?
  • Where in the house would be a good spot for them to grow?

We suggest starting off with some easy-to-maintain plants like succulents or cacti. These require very low maintenance and provide just the right amount of color for a small space.

If you’re on a tight budget, you may want to consider that certain planters and soil can be expensive as you continue to maintain your indoor oasis. Some great idea for cheap planters are used coffee or cookie tins, aluminum cans from canned veggies, pasta sauce jars, and even old baskets. You can also avoid spending money on expensive fertilizers by using natural waste that you would otherwise throw away, such as egg shells, used coffee grounds, and fruit peels.

Once you’ve selected the plants and supplies you want to add to your apartment, be sure to maintain consistent care of each plant. Try turning your plants by a few degrees each time you water them, so each side receives an equal amount of water and sunlight. When you have to go away for a long weekend, place a new, clean sponge filled with water at the base of the planter so it won’t become too dry as you are away.

Things People Forget When Moving

We’ve been moving homes, businesses, and college students for 22 years now, so we’ve seen it all! Sometimes our customers don’t have everything packed in time, or they have to keep delaying their move because of issues closing on their house, or they forget to label all their boxes and don’t know where to find anything in their new home. Here are the most common mistakes we see (and how to avoid them!) when it’s time to make your move.

Having an unorganized packing process.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK offers packing servicesPacking definitely takes more effort than most people assume it will when it comes time to prepare for Moving Day.  We always recommend that you begin packing up your home about a month prior to your moving date.  At that point, you may feel like you have plenty of time to get organized, but the process can be much more involved than you expect.

A few things to remember while packing:

  • You’ll want to use professional packing supplies as opposed to the “free” boxes you can pick up from grocery stores. These boxes can be dirty, contain pests, and be weakened from previous use during shipping.
  • You should also keep Moving Day necessities, such as outfits for the next week and phone chargers, separate from your other packed belongings.  The last thing you want to discover after a long day of moving is that you can’t find your toothbrush and bed sheets!
  • There are plenty of belongings you can pack weeks ahead of your moving date, such as out-of-season clothing and holiday decorations.  Sometimes packing way before you think you need to start can even help your house sell quickly.  Prospective home buyers want the homes they tour to feel open and accessible, so boxing up clutter on your bookshelves and in your toy room can make your home feel more spacious.
  • TWO MEN AND A TRUCK packing tipsLabel as you go, instead of waiting to pack everything first!  Sometimes it feels easier to wait until you’ve packed up a whole room before uncapping your Sharpie and labeling each box.  However, you may find that you have to move the boxes around to reach all corners of the room and accidentally mix up your belongings.  It’s definitely better to label as you go, preferably with different colors of permanent markers or stickers that help you easily identify which room each box belongs in.

Forgetting unseen items.

Packing and moving is such a long, stressful process that it’s easy to forget about belongings that usually hide in storage closets, kitchen cabinets, and extra attic space.  About a week before your movers come to move everything, check these places in your home so you won’t leave anything behind.  We’ll often see customers forget about the top shelves in their closets, yard furniture, and their kitchen pantry.

Running out of time to clean.

You don’t want to lose your security deposit or have a new homeowner upset about moving into a mess!  Many of our customers forget to block out time in their schedules to clean their old home after the movers have transferred their belongings to the new space.  It doesn’t make sense to clean before the move because dirt and dust can stir within the house after movers walk in and out multiple times.

Another tip to consider is setting aside your cleaning supplies in one closet that you ask the movers not to load on their truck.  Keep your floor cleaner, broom and mop, glass cleaner, etc., all in this closet so you won’t have to go out and buy more or drive out to your new home to retrieve these supplies when it comes time to clean.

Not arranging elevator and parking logistics.

When you live in a congested part of town, such as The Gulch or in a high rise downtown, you may need to speak with your property manager about a parking plan for your moving truck.  Keep in mind that standard moving trucks have a 26-foot box, so you’ll want about 35-40 feet of space for them to park, roll out their ramp, and maneuver furniture.  Some buildings also require you to reserve an elevator and properly pad the elevator prior to Moving Day to avoid causing delays for other tenants or damaging the elevator’s interior.

Not scheduling caregivers.

Moving with kidsHave you considered where your children and pets will stay during the hustle and bustle of Moving Day?  If you don’t have friends or family members in town who can watch the kids and critters, be sure you don’t wait until the last minute to schedule sitters.  We also recommend that adult children who are moving their aging parents arrange a caregiver for the day, especially if your parents are suffering from memory issues that can cause extra confusion during the relocation.

Failing to schedule vendor changes.

When you’re moving your home, be sure to call your electric, gas, and water companies prior to the move so you can avoid being overcharged for utilities you no longer need at your old residence.  This is also important because you may end up moving into a dark home if you forget to set up utilities in your new place!

While you set up these essentials, be sure to also notify your Internet service provider and the Post Office about your change of address and scheduled moving date.  This is also a great time to figure out your new trash and recycling pick-up schedule.  If you move within Metro Nashville, you can set up reminders for these pick-up days until you get into a new routine.

If you’re getting ready to move your business rather than your home, you’ll also want to make sure all customers and vendors know about your move.  Post a banner announcement on your website, add a highlighted line in your email signature, and set up an auto attendant message on your phone so customers will know about the change.  Also think through all the vendors you use for regular deliveries so you can notify them of your moving date for their records.

Waiting too late to schedule the movers.

So you’ve just made one of the hardest-yet-easiest decisions of your life: you decided to move to the up-and-coming neighborhood of Germantown! Within walking distance from downtown, this north Nashville neighborhood is filled with excitement in every corner. Germantown is rich with history, but it is ever changing as more people discover this charming neighborhood. Here are some of our favorite places to explore and eat in the Germantown area.

Morning Java: Coffee runs in the veins of most Nashvillians! You need to know about one of our favorite coffee shops, Red Bicycle, which has its original location right in the middle of Germantown. This delightful establishment has crepes and coffee to satisfy everyone in your family. You can also visit the Steadfast Coffee retail store and sip on locally brewed beans from Franklin, TN. Steadfast even has coffee soda for when your taste buds are feeling adventurous!

The best Nashville playgrounds near GermantownBest Playgrounds: We are so excited to let you in on our little secret, the new addition to Nashville called Cumberland Park. It has a greenway with trails for those who want to take in the views of downtown Nashville across the river, and there’s also a water play pad for kids to run around during the blistering summer heat. This park is always filled with events during the summer as well, such as the Jazz on the Cumberland series that goes on every Sunday night. Another place to take the kids is the Morgan Park, which also has a community center with regular activities!

Casual Eats: With so many restaurants popping up all over the place, one of our favorites is Germantown Cafe. You have to experience brunch at this place which has earned the loyalty of many Germantown natives. And if you prefer Mexican food, Little Donkey serves up all kinds of dips and traditional Latin American favorites. To cap off your delicious meals, you have to visit The Cupcake Collection! After you taste their cheap-and-delicious cupcakes, you won’t be able to stay away.

Baseball games in NashvilleFamily Fun: Nestled just minutes away from Germantown is First Tennessee Park, home of the Sounds, our local minor league baseball team! Take the family to one of the games and eat some funnel cake, play in the Kid Zone’s inflatable Booster mascot, and cheer on the country music legends as they race between innings. We also suggest a trip to LaserQuest, where you can let your inner child loose and play Parents versus the Kids. And don’t forget the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge, which is perfect for Instagram shots of the family.

Grown-Up Fun: If you haven’t been already, take your friends to the Escape Game to test your problem-solving abilities in an interactive mystery game! Celebrities like Shawn Mendez, Tim Tebow, and Kelly Clarkson have all played this strategy game and loved it. For those music loving individuals, you will for sure want to check out a concert or two at Ascend Amphitheater. With a lovely view of downtown surrounding it, the outdoor venue is perfect for enjoying a show. In October, Germantown is transformed to celebrate the Nashville’s four-day Oktoberfest. Admission is free, and there are tons of local vendors. You can also spot traditional dancing, a dressed-up doggy parade, and other activities.

Nashville southern country livingStaycation Attractions: When you’re ready to be a tourist in your own town, Germantown is the perfect place to start! The Nashville Farmers Market is a must for your long summer weekends, located just up the street in the heart of Bicentennial Park. There are lots of yummy food options, flowers, and other local goods. If you’re craving a night on the town, grab a pair of cowboy boots and flannels and head out to Wildhorse Saloon for down-home line dancing and pool. You can round out your southern staycation with a trip to the original location of Monell’s, which features all kinds of comfort food.

Unique Spots: With events ranging from the Italian Lights Festival to free Tuesday afternoon yoga sessions, you will not want to pass up Bicentennial Mall! You can see all their upcoming events on the Tennessee state’s website. Peter Nappi also has a retail store in Germantown featuring locally-designed, Italian-made luxurious leather goods. And you can even visit our local fish market at Little’s Fish Company!

This cause is obviously near and dear to our hearts! Last year was our first year hosting this coat drive benefiting K-4th grade students who attend Park Avenue Elementary School and live in poverty. We were able to collect 200 coats–enough to ensure every child who needed one was able to receive a warm jacket during the winter! This year, if you come out to help us fill a 16-foot moving truck with coats, sweaters, and jackets, you can enter to win a free pair of tickets to a December performance of The Nutcracker, performed by the Nashville Ballet and Nashville Symphony. Every July, the Nashville Ballet hosts its biggest discount of the year for its annual Nutcracker performance, where purchasers can get their holiday tickets early for a much lower fee. The non-profit also celebrates with flash mob-style performances around town and invitations for children to audition for roles. During the summer, Nashville Shores always hosts a “Dive-In Movie” series, where family-friendly movies begin at dusk for park goers to enjoy. This year, the park is taking the tradition a step further by hosting a full day dedicated the the Christmas in July celebration! Simply bring an unwrapped toy (which will be donated to Toys for Tots), and your whole family can enjoy admission for $19.99 each. (And if you have season passes, it’s even cheaper!) The first 200 guests will also receive a commemorative ornament or Polar Express bell.

Every month, the Adventure Science Center opens its doors to teach kids 10 and up about how to manipulate parts from old devices to make new, ingenius inventions! July is an especially good month for holiday-hungry kids to join in the fun so they can do the same job as Santa’s elves and make their own new toys.  The cost is also very affordable–either $4 if you’re a member or $7 if you aren’t! And don’t worry–the program starts with a safety lesson, and ends with your child taking home his or her new favorite toy.

Celebrate Christmas early with Yogi Bear and his friends! When you camp out at Jellystone Park this weekend, your family can have fun making snowflakes, playing in snowball fights, hunting the gingerbread man and making his home, and even chatting with Santa Claus on Saturday! Jellystone also raffles off a Yogi Bear stuffed animal to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital over the Christmas in July weekend. There are also plenty of activities that happen every weekend at the park, including games, karaoke, face painting, and rides.

We’re getting ready for our second annual Christmas in July Coat Drive! When Nashville starts to get chilly in the winter, many local parents aren’t able to afford new jackets to properly fit their children. A couple years ago, we decided we wanted to host a coat drive to specifically benefit the students at Park Avenue Elementary who are living in poverty. Unfortunately, coat drives usually take place in the middle of winter after the kids are already in need of clothing to keep them warm. So last July, we decided to host a “Christmas in July” coat drive to collect jackets, coats, and sweaters ahead of time to prepare Park Avenue ahead of the winter season.

We hope you’ll keep supporting these local children in need by coming to this year’s Christmas in July celebration on July 8th from 9 am-11 am! Our goal is to fill a 16-foot moving truck with new and gently-used coats, jackets, and sweaters for these K through 4th grade students. We’ll be parked in front of the Nashville location of Thriftsmart on Nolensville Road to take your donations.

Two Easy DIY Father’s Day Gifts

Easy DIY Fathers Day Gifts out of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving boxes

We’re just one week out from Father’s Day–one of the most difficult holidays ever when we try to brainstorm gift ideas! How do you find the perfect gift for the dad who has everything, or the dad who is your super hero? After a lot of discussion with our Movers and office staff who are dads, we noticed that all of their favorite past gifts had something in common: all of them were handmade by their kids.

If you’re still looking for some last-minute present inspiration, here are some ideas we came up with! Both of these crafts can be made out of used moving boxes from your last relocation, and they’re super personalized for the amazing father in your life.

Rope Swing Bookmarks

How to make bookmarks out of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving boxes

To make these high-flying bookmarks, you’ll need:

  • Old moving box
  • Box cutter or crafting knife
  • Camera (we used a mobile phone)
  • Color printer
  • Photo glue (heavier-duty than normal glue sticks)
  • Hole Puncher
  • Woven ribbon

Step One: Have each of your kids pose in front of a solid-colored background with their hands grabbing an imaginary rope over their heads. We used these kiddos’ bedroom doors to provide a solid color, but you can also have them pose laying on the grass outside or in front of a white wall. Take their photos as they keep their legs straight or bent like they’re gliding through the air!

DIY Father's Day bookmarks made out of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving boxesStep Two: Print out the photos and cut around their body shapes. At this point, we laminated our photos to protect against water stains or long-term wear, but you don’t have to do this!

Step Three: Use your photo glue to set each child’s photo against the cardboard surface of the box. Once the photo has dried to the box, cut around the outlined shape again.

Step Four: Punch a hole right underneath the imaginary rope your child is holding in the air. Then cut your ribbon down to your preferred length and tie a lark’s head knot (also known as a cow hitch knot) through the hole.

Step Five: Give to Dad inside his brand new book!

Dancing Fridge Magnets

To make these hilarious man cave mini-fridge magnets, you’ll need:

  • Old moving box
  • Box cutter or crafting knife
  • Camera (we used a mobile phone)
  • Color printer
  • Glue stick
  • Brads
  • Adhesive magnet strips

Step One: Take a photo of each of your children standing in a position where they have space between their arms and sides, and between their legs.

Step Two: Print two copies of each photo. With the first copy, cut around the edge of the head and midsection of the photo. With the second copy, cut around the edges of the arms and legs. Make sure the arms and legs have some overlap of the midsection, or you won’t have any overlap to place a brad!

Step Three: Glue each body part to a section of your used moving box, and cut around each shape.

Step Four: Carefully poke a brad through each overlapping piece to attach your arms and legs to the midsections.  Then fold the brad tips back behind the cardboard.

Step Five: Stick a strip of adhesive magnet to the back of each kiddo, and arrange the arms and legs to your preferred stance! Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Two-Minute Guide: How to Pack Your Dishes

Learn to pack your dishes like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK

We’ve been moving and packing Nashville’s belongings for over 21 years now, and we like to share everything we’ve learned to help you have the easiest moving experience possible. Packing is by far the longest step in the moving process, and we know you have a lot of work ahead of you, so we put together a quick guide to pack your dishes so nothing gets broken along the way.

First, you want to start with a “Dish Pack” or “Dish Barrel” box.  We’re in love with these boxes because they’re double-walled to ensure stability and great cushioning, plus they come with a cell pack that creates adjustable pockets to fit each dish.  Tape up the bottom of the box with 3 strips of tape.  (We always use 3 strips at the bottom of every box, no matter what the type.)

Next, open up your cell pack.  This is another ingenious creation, because every part of the pack turns into practical packing supplies, including the top cover showing the contents of the pack.  Take that cover and fold the side flaps into a makeshift spring (pictured on the cell pack).  Press this down to the bottom of your box to add yet another layer of protective cushioning, just in case the box gets dropped.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK how to pack dishesNow you’re ready to put together your first set of dividers.  There are tall and short dividers, but you want to start with the shorter ones.  Use the interlocking pieces to create 16 separate pockets that can be used for drinking glasses, silverware, and other small, breakable items you find in your kitchen.  Roll each glass in a sheet of packing paper, with the ends folded and taped to the side.  This way, the glass is less likely to slip out or become exposed, and rolls of silverware have less chance of stabbing through the end of the paper roll.  If a glass doesn’t fill up the full pocket, stuff extra crumpled paper to fill in the gaps so it won’t shift during transit.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK how to pack plates and bowlsOnce your first layer of dishes has been packed up, flatten one side of the cell pack and lay it over the top.  This barrier ensures your glassware won’t rub against or chip any dishes from layers above or below.  Then put together your next set of dividers.  If you’re ready to pack up the plates and bowls, use the taller dividers.  The tall dividers allow you to stand up the dishes vertically, where they’ll be less likely to break if the box shifts in your moving van.  Again, fill in extra space with crumpled packing paper.  You can also use the smaller square pockets around the edges of this layer to place more drinking glasses and trinkets.

That’s it!  Those are the four steps to take when packing up your kitchenware.
