TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s summer internship program brought 19 young professionals to our Home Office in Lansing, Mich., to learn and work on projects in key areas throughout the company. One intern who made a great impact in our human resources department is Rachel Christine! Rachel supported recruiting initiatives and generated careers content, including writing many of the blog posts we’ve published here this summer, and continues to support the team this fall.
Tell me a little about yourself.
“I am a senior this year at Michigan State University, finishing my degree in business and Spanish. I’ve always desired to work in today’s corporate business world, and have studied Spanish since I was young, so I’m very happy to be finishing college with these two degrees! I’m originally from Chicago, Ill., and moved to Saugatuck, Mich., several years ago. Saugatuck is extremely fun in the summer, but it’s also very small, so I definitely miss living close to a big city. Before my internship, I completed a nine-week program in Valencia, Spain, where I finished my Spanish degree in a university there. I feel very confident in my ability to speak Spanish, and would love to eventually incorporate these skills into my job one day.”
What main projects are you working on during your internship?
“I interned with the human resources department this summer and continue to work in the areas of recruitment marketing, corporate writing, and interviewing. One project I’ve worked on is recruitment brand content generation. For example, I interviewed our interns for our Moving People Forward® blog just like this! I’ve also assisted our company in developing ways to stay competitive for talent through forward-thinking and research. Posting recruitment ads and developing knowledge of the recruitment software TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® uses is a huge part of my internship as well! I’ve had an interest in human resources for a while, so I’m very lucky to have an opportunity to intern with this department – especially for a large company!”
What’s your favorite thing about your internship?
“My favorite thing is how TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has a clear goal of developing their interns into young business professionals. Whether it’s learning how to execute something in a specific department or being trusted with an important project, the people within this company are constantly doing what they can to help you improve professionally. This is definitely not the typical filing documents or fetching coffee internship. For example, you receive your own cubicle, laptop, and monitor! You sit in on meetings and conference calls and receive real-life projects that are actually important to the company. They set up weekly presentations throughout the summer for their interns to learn how to be competitive and marketable within our specific fields, presenting anything from improving our LinkedIn profiles, learning a perfect handshake, or providing exceptional answers in an interview. The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® family truly cares about their interns, and that’s something I’ve noticed since day one!”
If you could do anything you wanted right now, what would it be?
“If I could do anything right now, I would love to move to Dublin, Ireland. I visited this summer, and it quickly became my favorite place in the world. The people were great and I loved the weather. One of my favorite things to do is travel and it’s only a quick plane ride to many other exciting countries in Europe when departing from Ireland. If I wasn’t going to move, I would at least love to spend an extended duration of time there and bring my family and friends. Coincidentally, one of the four countries TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is located is in Ireland as well!”
What’s next for you?
“First, the most important thing is graduating in the spring. One of my goals includes staying on the Dean’s List for my last two semesters at Michigan State University. I will most likely be spending the next several months applying to and interviewing with different companies. I would love to eventually relocate back to Chicago and live in the city for a few years, so I hope to find a company to build my career with in that location.”
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
“When I was abroad, I had the opportunity to travel to a different country each weekend. I was able to see Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, and The Netherlands. However, the one place I’ve always wanted to travel to is Africa. I’ve seen excursion groups advertising camel rides through the Sahara Desert, which is something I would really love to do. I’ve also always wanted to do a real-life safari and stay in a safari lodge while there.”
Rachel’s adaptability and willingness to tackle new projects has been invaluable to the team, and we’re happy to have her! Thanks for being part of the team, Rachel!
