This summer, the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Home Office in Lansing, Mich., is hosting 19 college students through our annual summer intern program. Continuing with our intern blog series, meet Christian Fairbanks! Christian is heading into his senior year at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and this summer, he is joining us as a legal intern within the compliance department.
Welcome to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, Christian!
Tell me a little about yourself.
“I’m from Columbus, Ind., and this fall will be my senior year of college. This will also be my fourth year on scholarship to play for the men’s golf team. I recently took the law school admission test, and plan to attend Michigan State University College of Law in the fall of 2018. I like to play beach volleyball, basketball, tennis, and golf. I also enjoy fishing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, and long-distance cycling. There aren’t really any sports I don’t like, but I also I love to read, learn, and make new friends. As a bit of background, I became an Eagle Scout when I was 17, and won the high school state golf championship when I was 18. I once went on a 12-day backpacking trip in the southern Rocky Mountains of New Mexico, and I have been playing piano since I was seven.”
What does a typical day at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® look like for you?
“I try to get to the office a few minutes early so I can read the news online before starting the day. After greeting everyone for the day and having a cup of coffee, I usually continue a project I’m working on or start a new one. I also attend meetings and help with research. After work, I’ll head home or go practice golf.”
What main projects are you tackling during your internship?
“This summer, my main project is creating a user-friendly but dynamic spreadsheet to help Home Office monitor franchise compliance in various aspects of the business to ensure franchises are on the right track. I’m also organizing information on each location’s household goods tariff, reading and organizing contract agreements, and researching tax exemptions in each state’s tax code.”
What are you hoping to learn or accomplish this summer?
“I’d like to learn about the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of an in-house corporate attorney, as well as accomplish all assignments I’m tasked with that would add value to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®.”
“I like that all the Home Office employees are extremely nice and helpful. I also like that I get my own desk, laptop, and computer monitor.”
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
“I wanted to be an aeronautical engineer. Airplanes used to, and still do, fascinate me. I used to want to design aircraft until I was 15. I found law to be more exciting when I started talking with my uncle who is a real estate attorney in Los Angeles.”
If you could have anyone’s job at Home Office for a day, what would it be?
“I would want to have Jeff Wesley’s job. I’d love to see his perspective as the CEO, and how he views the company as a whole. I’d also be interested in the types of meetings he sits in on and how he works with the other executives.”
What’s your favorite kind of ice cream?
“Death by Chocolate – it’s chocolate ice cream with chocolate pieces and fudge. It’s delicious!”
We’re excited to have Christian here this summer. His determination and positive attitude make him a great addition to Home Office!
