Tips for a successful first day at a new job – straight from the minds of hiring managers!

Most of us can agree that finding a new job is typically a long – and sometimes very stressful – process. It begins with searching through online job boards, researching company backgrounds, sprucing up your resume, and filling out job applications, then the interview – sometimes more than one – until it finally happens. The phone rings and the call you’ve been waiting for has arrived. You happily accept an offer for the perfect position with a great new company!

First off, a congratulations is in order! All of your hard work has paid off, and now it’s time to start a new chapter in your professional life. Since first impressions are important, we decided to enlist the expertise of a few hiring managers from the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise system about what new employees can do to ensure a successful first day. Here’s what they had to say!

Be prepared and punctual

Read your offer letter carefully to make sure you are clear on the time and place and bring all the proper documents requested. This can vary depending on the company, so don’t assume you already know what you need to bring. You could be asked to bring bank information for direct deposit, specific types of identification, or even pre-completed paperwork. If you are unable to provide any required items listed, don’t wait until the day you start. Reach out and inform your new employer so it can be handled beforehand.

Natalie Frederickson, human resources manager of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Scottsdale, said this is a topic she’s consistently coaching her team on.

“Being on time, especially on your first day, shows you have respect for other people,” Frederickson said. “It shows you care as much about their time and schedule as your own. Our days are usually scheduled back-to-back, so if someone doesn’t show up or comes in an hour late, it affects the entire operation.”

Do your research

The first step in being successful in a new role is to understand your new company’s values and goals. Taking the time to thoroughly learn the company background is important – not only before interviews, but also before your first day – as these are typically talking points when meeting with managers and executives.

Mike Reps, general manager at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Rochester, Minn., centers the majority of their new hire orientation around the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® core values.

Be open, even if you have experience

Having previous experience in a similar role as your new job is always a plus – it probably has a lot to do with why you landed the gig. However, that doesn’t always mean there isn’t more to learn. Walking in with the attitude that you already know everything is a great way to start off on the wrong foot with your new co-workers. Remember, first impressions are important!

“We are not looking for our new hires to be perfect, even if they happen to have prior experience in the moving industry.” said Jeremy Lawless, operations manager at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Dayton North, Ohio.

”Experience is certainly a plus, but to see them have the desire to learn how we do things here is extremely important. How a new hire responds to instructions and feedback, and how they communicate with others is key to becoming a successful employee at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®.

Have fun!

This is something that many people forget, especially when they are nervous about starting a new job, but we’ll let you in on secret: everyone was new at one point, and they were nervous when they first started, too! We all have to start somewhere, so try to start off on the right foot. Smile when you pass by people, and try to get to know your co-workers. Being positive, approachable, and allowing yourself to have fun at work is only going to help you move forward in your career.

“Having fun at and enjoying the work you do starts with the type of attitude you have when you walk through the door,” said Sheryl Armock, human resources generalist at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Champaign. “There will always be outside forces that may try to sway your opinion and outlook. However, you have the ability to decide how you respond to these forces. If you set your attitude to positive, neutral or negative – those outside forces will impact you accordingly.”
