They say time flies when you’re having fun, and here we are again with another summer at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® coming to a close. Over the past three months, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s Home Office welcomed 20 summer interns and provided them the opportunity to learn about the company, industry, and professional working world in general. While most of our interns this year were first-timers, I had the amazing opportunity to intern here not only this summer, but last summer as well. Looking back at how much I have learned and grown as a person, as well as all of the friends I have made, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
Before starting at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® I was a very quiet person but last summer I interned in the marketing department, where being quiet isn’t really an option. I had the opportunity to do grassroots marketing with a fellow intern where I became comfortable introducing myself to strangers and promoting a company I just started working at! This summer I interned in the human resources department and was still surprising myself with the things I am capable of doing. It’s clear TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® not only pushes to exceed customers’ expectations but they push their employees to be the best they can be, even if the employee doesn’t know what their best is yet.
Always growing, always learning, and always pushing people forward. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® continuously surprises me, or I guess I should say it pushes me to keep surprising myself. It has been amazing to return this summer and see how much the company has grown just in the nine months I was gone. Not only has the company grown and welcomed new employees, it has also implemented many new programs and projects! One of my biggest take-aways from my two summers here is you have to be willing to challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone if you really want to learn, grow, and move forward. As Brig Sorber, one of the original Two Men, would say, “You have to get comfortable being uncomfortable!”
Thoughts from my intern friends
One thing all the interns agree on about interning at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is we felt important here.
“I had no idea what to expect when I first came to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® for my internship. It turned out to be such a great experience,” said HR Systems and Projects Intern Hannah Romain “I feel like I was treated as more of an employee than ‘just an intern’. Unlike many college students who find themselves making coffee runs and organizing files during their internships, I really feel like I contributed something of significance to the company during my time here. The people at Home Office are so friendly and approachable and really helped me learn and grow. I’m so thankful for my experience as an intern at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® this summer.”
On the very first day we are assigned with important tasks and projects. This can be a little intimidating, but everyone around TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is so friendly and willing to help that you can ask almost anyone for support if you are confused or just need an extra hand with a project. One of the many tasks that made me feel like I was making a difference was when the Lansing HR intern and I were assigned to assist in conducting interviews for potential new hires.
For Charles Staky, one of five marketing interns, one of his greatest memories was working directly with a franchise marketer. “My supervisor had a lot on her plate that week and received an email asking to look into a radio advertisement buy to determine who it would affect,” said Charles “She gave me the task of splitting up the cost for each franchise who would be involved and relaying the information to the marketer. This was awesome because I had not dealt with anything franchise- facing all summer and I felt accomplished knowing she trusted my abilities enough to let me take the task on by myself.”
Due to the fact our supervisors entrusted us with so much, most of us walk away from our internships at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® feeling similar to Stephen Jacobson, who was the business intelligence accounting support intern. “I learned many essential skills that are applicable to my fields,” he said.
Along with learning so much about our own departments and fields, the interns had lunch and learn meetings weekly with different Home Office departments. Subject matter experts presented to the interns the function of that particular department, how they support the company, and how they are connected and work with other departments. This really put a lot of perspective into how the projects we worked on as interns affected the company as a whole, and added to how we were making an impact on the company. I think I can speak for all the interns when I say, we are all so thankful for the awesome opportunity to be a part of such a motivated company. Thank you to every single person at Home Office and the Lansing franchise for making this summer such a wonderful learning experience.
