Interns Who Care – Elizabeth Hosking

Written by Corinne DeVries

Meet Liz!

Liz grew up in Big Rapids where she played golf, basketball, and tennis at Big Rapids High School. She is now a junior studying advertising at Michigan State University.

liz1Tell me about yourself.

I have three older brothers. My oldest brother is a dentist in Texas, so I don’t get to see him very much. My other two brothers live around Detroit, and the youngest just started med school! I go home on the weekends to see my parents. My family is split half and half between Michigan State University and the University of Michigan (rivals!). My mom, oldest brother, and I are Spartans, and my dad and two other brothers went to U of M. I have a cat, Milo, and he learned how to play fetch. I have never met another cat like him.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I really like baking gourmet cupcakes. My favorite to make and eat are my Snickers cupcakes. Occasionally I play tennis for fun. I also golf with my dad and brothers quite a bit, and I enjoy spending time with friends.

Have you had an accounting internship before?

No, this is my first internship. My family is close to the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® CFO Jeff Wesley’s brother.  He filled in me on the company, and shortly after, the accounting internship opened up for the summer. It was really last minute and unexpected, but I thought it would be a good experience so I decided to pursue it. I thought it would be useful to learn about accounting even though it’s not part of my major.

What made you want to intern with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

After talking with Jeff’s brother, I began looking into the company and it seemed like a fun, work atmosphere and everyone seemed to really enjoy the culture and time they spend at the office.

What is your favorite part about interning at Two Men and a Truck so far?

I really like the environment. Everyone is really welcoming and it’s laid back, but everyone is working hard. They know how to have fun but they also know when it’s time to get down to work.

liz2What are you looking to get out of this internship?

I’m just looking for experience and a better understanding of accounting. Although it’s not part of my major it’s something I can use regardless of what I decide to do. I think understanding the accounting and financial side of a business will be really helpful for me in the future.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself probably still in Michigan with my cat, Milo. I’ve thought about going to grad school but I am unsure at this point, so I’ll either be in school or hopefully have a job in the business side of advertising.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

I would want the ability to time travel, because then I could go into the future or the past and relive history or experience events and time periods I wasn’t around for.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be and why?

Steve Jobs. I think it would be really interesting to hear about how Apple was founded and how they grew the business the way they did. The company started off small and is now one of the most valuable companies in the world. Being able to talk to one of the original founders would be really interesting and provide a lot of really cool information.

Interns Who Care – Corinne DeVries

Meet Corinne!

Corinne grew up in Rochester Hills, Michigan, where she was a three-sport varsity athlete at Rochester Adams High School. She played golf, basketball, and track & field. Corinne also played travel basketball and soccer outside of school. This year, she is a senior on the varsity rowing team at Michigan State University, where she is studying communications and health, and will be attending graduate school at MSU for her master’s in interpersonal communications.

Corinne1Tell me about yourself.

Corinne: I have one sister, Monica, who is two years younger than me and my best friend. We were on the golf team together my junior and senior year of high school which was the best experience! We used to drive to practice together every day with the top down, sing to every song on the radio, and talk about life. We also have the cutest dog ever, Bailey. My dad is the chef of the family, and he is the best cook! My favorite thing he makes is steak au poivre, and I ask him to make it for my birthday every year. My mom is a very skilled artist and has her own studio, North Fire Studios. Our family likes to go up north on the weekends to our cottage in Kalkaska. It’s so relaxing up there. My dad will make dinner and we take it out on the boat and cruise around the lake.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Corinne: During the school year most of my free time is taken up by rowing. When I’m not rowing I like to hang out with my teammates and friends, go to the movies, or have bonfires. I also love drawing, especially pictures or cards for other people. And I like singing, but not in the presence of others!

Have you had a marketing internship before?

Corinne: No, this is my first internship! Last summer I was a camp counselor for five-year-olds. It was so fun, I thought nothing could beat that job but my internship at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has been a blast. I’ve learned so much!

What made you want to intern with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Corinne: Well, CFO Jeff Wesley has been friends with my parents since before I was born. I grew up a few houses down the street and was best friends with his daughter, Emily. I knew he worked here and I had heard so many great things about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®. So I asked Mr. Wesley if they had an internship program, and here I am. I’m actually desk buddies with his youngest daughter Erin, who I haven’t seen in a long time!

Corinne2What is your favorite part about interning at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® so far?

Corinne: The people and the projects! Everyone at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is friendly and always ready to help someone else with a problem, regardless of how busy their own schedules are. I feel comfortable going to not only my supervisor, but anyone in my department for help. I also like that the projects are meaningful and help the company in some way. I’ve been busy helping with internal communications as well as writing a various blogs for external communications. I’ve also been working on a few video project for the HR department with my fellow marketing interns, Jason and Ellie. They are both so nice and so fun to work with, just like everyone else at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®.

What are you looking to get out of this internship?

Corinne: I want to get a good idea of what it’s like to work at an actual company and also narrow down what it is I want to do after I graduate. I majored in communications because I like people. I don’t really know exactly what I want to do, I just know I want to work with people. I’m hoping this experience will help me figure that out. I get to work on different projects and see the different aspects of communication and marketing which will definitely help me determine my career path.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Corinne: In five years I will be graduated from graduate school, probably living in Michigan. I’d love to work at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, or at least somewhere like it! I definitely see myself with a dog or maybe two. I love huskies!

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

Corinne: I would want the super power of always knowing the right answer, so that I’m never confused and I can solve any problem. That would be so helpful in getting things done.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be and why?

Corinne: Papa, my mom’s dad, was one of the most awesome people that I have ever known. He was the biggest goofball and he was really smart. He passed away of cancer when I was 14. I remember when I was maybe 4, my mom and my aunt played on the same soccer team and he and my grandma would come to the games with us. He always had Tootsie Rolls or Werther’s in his pockets. He would make us guess which hand they were in and he’d play games with us. It’d be nice to talk with him again and catch up.

Corinne has been a key asset to the marketing team this summer and has helped with many projects so far. We are happy to have Corinne working with us and are excited to see the awesome things she will do for the duration of her internship.

Interns Who Care – Jake Woodland

Written by Corinne DeVries

Meet Jake!

Jake grew up in East Lansing, Mich., and played basketball, lacrosse, and ran cross country at Lansing Christian High School. Jake will be a freshman studying biology at Grand Valley State University this fall. Initially, Jake was interested in attending a large university, however he liked the small school feel he found at Grand Valley.

JakeTell me about yourself

I have three younger sisters: Alison, 16; Natalie, 14; and Samantha, 12. We hang out together all the time. We’ll shoot hoops, play soccer in the front yard, jump on the trampoline, or swim in our pool. I enjoy going fishing, hunting for deer and geese, and going to the shooting range occasionally. Every year around Christmas time and every weekend in the summer, we go to our cottage up north on Stoney Lake near Muskegon.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I play basketball with friends, hang out, go to movies, and go swimming. When we go up to my cottage, we go water skiing and salmon fishing on Lake Michigan when the water’s calm. Anyone who has been on Lake Michigan knows it can get really rough.

Have you had a risk management internship before?

No I haven’t, this is my first risk management internship. Last summer, I helped scientists at Michigan State University with their research. I also conducted my own project, trying to regulate the cold genes in plants which allows plants to grow in cold temperatures. It was a fun experience!

What made you want to intern with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

I heard about it through my mom. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is a great company and I knew I would gain a valuable experience while working full-time here this summer. Although I didn’t know what I would be doing, I knew I’d be getting one-of-a-kind corporate experience.

What is your favorite part about interning at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® so far?

I like helping and being on my team. I typically work on updating spreadsheets as well as making forms for our franchises. I really like the people I work with, it’s a good community.

What are you looking to get out of this internship?

Office experience. My dad has said hardest part about his dental practice is running the business. So if I can learn as much as I can about business, it will help me when I takeover his practice. I also want to make a difference in the company while I’m here. I want to be able to talk to people and point out one thing that I did that made the company better.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I want to be a dentist. I’m planning on taking over my dad’s practice someday. So hopefully I’m just starting dental school in five years.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

I’d want to fly so I can travel whenever I want. I’d want to fly to Alaska because I hear it’s beautiful. I like the outdoors and being outside, which is what I think of when I think of Alaska. I’d want to visit during the summer though— I don’t like snow.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be and why?

George Washington or Abraham Lincoln because they did incredible things to help build the country. It would be cool to get to know them and hear about their experiences.

Interns Who Care – Tony DiCicco

Written by Corinne DeVries

Meet Tony!

Tony is an intern in the IT department. He grew up in St. Johns, Michigan and went to St. Johns High School. He is currently a CNSA- Computer Network and Systems Administration- major at Michigan Technological University. He was initially attracted to Michigan Tech because it is a small school and has a 95% employment rate after graduation. After choosing Michigan Tech, Tony joined the Sigma Epsilon fraternity on campus.

Tony1  Tell me about yourself.

Tony: I have an older sister, Becca, who is 24. We don’t get to hang out very much except on weekends. Everyone comes over and we will hang out for a few hours. My dad usually barbeques or smokes meat. He makes a really good flank steak, it’s so big! I like to eat a lot, so those are always fun. I’ll text my mom and dad to stay in touch, but I mostly just see them on the weekends as well.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Tony: I like to watch a lot of movies, especially comedies. I like comedians like Kevin Heart and Tosh. I also really like sleeping. In the winter my friends and I will go outside and build statues out of snow and ice. Two years ago we built a 15-20 ft. A-T-A-T from star wars. We made a whole star wars scene out of snow for winter carnival.

Have you had an IT internship before?

Tony: No, this is my first internship. I used to do construction and remodeling with my dad over the summers.Tony2

What made you want to intern with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Tony: My friend Nick has worked here for a year and a half and he said the culture is great. I definitely agree- work hard play hard.

What is your favorite part about interning at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® so far?

Tony: The culture and the environment as a whole is awesome. You have managers and bosses who are very relatable so it’s not intimidating or scary to talk with them, which is great for productivity.

Tony3What are you looking to get out of this internship?

Mostly experience, but also relationships. There are a lot of great people here, who have done a lot with their life and their stories are cool.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’ll probably be in Michigan for the next 10 years. I’ll be in IT, but I’m not sure what specifically I see myself doing. There are so many possibilities, I could work with hardware or software. Half my degree is in business management so there really are a lot of options.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

I’d want my superpower to be a combination of time travel and teleportation. I could visit any point in history and experience it as it was happening. I’d also be able to travel anywhere in the world.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be and why?

I would have lunch with Neil Armstrong. Interviews with friends of his stated he was a very interesting person, leading a life of excitement and exploration. Plus he’s been on the moon, which is awesome.
