Interns Who Care – Jenna Johnston

Written by Corinne DeVries

Meet Jenna!

Jenna graduated from Haslett High School in 2013. She will be a junior at Grand Valley State University this fall studying health communications. She started off in the ultrasound program and later decided to switch majors so she could have additional career options.

Jenna1Tell me about yourself.

Jenna: I have a younger brother, Thomas, who just graduated high school and will be playing baseball at Northwood College this coming year! My mom used to dress us the same. I hated wearing matching clothes, it made me feel like a boy! I’m really close with my parents. One of our family traditions is to go skiing at Boyne Mountain for New Year’s. I also really enjoy fishing with my dad during the summer.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Jenna: I love to workout. I’m big into yoga and basketball. I also really like to read; I like Tina Fey and The Mindy Project. Funny autobiographies are my favorite. I want to read Amy Poehler’s book next!

Have you had prior internships before TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Jenna: No, but I think working in the training and development department is a great experience. It’s cool because I get to work with a lot of different departments and get a good overview of what working at a company is like. We are working on revamping and updating training courses, manuals from the company’s intranet, and e-learning quizzes.

What made you want to intern with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Jenna: I needed experience doing something other than working in the medical field. I’m looking to expand my experiences and see what I like. My neighbor, Lindsey Schaibly, works here and told me about their internship program so I looked into it!

What is your favorite part about interning at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® so far?

Jenna: The atmosphere and the people. Everybody in the training department has been super welcoming and happy. The office happy hour was a fun way to meet everyone. I was also able to sit down with the president and talk with him about my interests and goals – he really took an interest and effort in meeting all of the interns.

Jenna2What are you looking to get out of this internship?

Jenna: I’m looking to broaden my experience and explore the business world to find what I’m good at and what I like to do.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Jenna: Oh boy, I barely know what next week is going to bring! I see myself graduated from college. If the right opportunity came about, I would try to find a job somewhere outside of Michigan. The more I work at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, the more I like it —every day is different and there is always something new.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

Jenna: Super speed, so I could run everywhere and not have to pay for gas, because gas prices are going up.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be and why?

Jenna: Shaquille O’Neil because I love him. I always think he’s funny in commercials and he’d be a fun person to get to know.

Jenna is an extremely friendly and helpful person. She is the perfect fit for our Training and Development team. We have enjoyed having her in the office and look forward to the rest of the summer with her!

Interns Who Care – Tyler Trierweiler

Written by Corinne DeVries

Meet Tyler!

Tyler played baseball at Grand Ledge High School and is now a sophomore studying marketing and logistics at Central Michigan University. He has three older brothers — Patrick, 34; Brandon, 30; and Travis, 23. Tyler also has two sisters, Kasey, 22 and Kenzie, 17.

Tyler1Tell me about yourself.

Tyler: My oldest brother, Patrick, lives in Brazil, so I don’t see him much. I’m close with my other siblings, especially my brother, Travis. I like going to his apartment to hang out. I have a good relationship with my parents, and my dad and I golf every weekend in Grand Ledge. We enjoy going to Colorado to visit my aunts —it’s nice being in a different environment, hiking, and enjoying the great outdoors. I have a dog, Cosmo, who is 12. He’s pretty active and he’ll run with me when I want him to. Something interesting about me is that I have white coat syndrome — a fear of doctors and hospitals. I get panic attacks when I’m around them. Last summer one of my teammates was swinging a bat in the dugout and hit me in the face. The traumatic event resulted in 46 stitches in my lip, 7 surgeries, and four shiny fake teeth. When it happened, I went into shock so I didn’t really feel any pain, thank goodness! On the plus side, I think my teeth look better than they did before.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Tyler: I like being outside, being active, hanging out with friends, and playing baseball. My friends and I play pickup basketball. I also try to run a few times a week. I play club dodgeball at CMU. My team and I like hanging out on weekends when we have tournaments. We play schools like Bowling Green State University and Grand Valley State University.

Tyler2Have you had an operations internship before?

Tyler: No, but I love it. There are a lot of aspects of business and I’m learning a lot at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®. I work with the Franchise Business Consultants (FBCs) and keep in touch with franchises to make sure they’re following protocol. I also work with field training and development to talk about franchise startups and make sure they’re getting off on the right foot. I’m looking forward to going to the South Bend, Ind., franchise opening mid-July. I think it’ll be an awesome experience!

What made you want to intern with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Tyler: My sister was an accounting intern here for two years and had nothing but good things to say about her experience. It’s a good company and family environment.

What is your favorite part about interning at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® so far?

Tyler: The overall experience and learning so much about business. Everyone who works here is especially nice, and will slow down to explain things to me since I still have so much to learn.

What are you looking to get out of this internship?

Tyler: I want to figure out more clearly what I want to focus on in my major. Having this internship is huge for me, and the experience at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is second to none. They have the interns sit in the meetings and meet franchise owners and get involved. It’s not just desk work.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Tyler: I hope to have a good job doing something I love. I hope I’m living in South Carolina. I would also like to have a dog.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

Tyler: I would like to fly because I would be able to get places faster and never have to deal with traffic. I could live far away from my family but still visit them whenever I want.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be and why?

Tyler: LeBron James, I’m a huge LeBron fan. I’ve liked him ever since I watched him in high school on ESPN. My friends make fun of me because I’m such a big fan, and make jokes about how much I like him, but I’m just a huge fan.

Interns Who Care – Erin Wesley

Written by Corinne DeVries

Erin grew up in Okemos, Mich., and attended Okemos High School. Currently, Erin is a sophomore studying graphic design at Grand Valley State University. She loves the small campus feel at GVSU, go Lakers! This summer Erin is working closely with our Creative Coordinator, Claire, to create a variety of promotional materials for the marketing department.

Erin1Tell me about yourself.

Erin: I have a 21-year-old sister, Emily, who is my best friend. We have a dog, Sparky, who is basically our little brother. We have an Instagram account just for him —reallifeofsparky. Some of our favorite things to do include taking Sparky to the track, and eating — a lot! We finish each other’s sentences and are always thinking the same thing. Sometimes we are caught having conversations that don’t make sense to anyone who overhears them, but we get it, we understand each other. I am also very close with my parents, we have Lifetime movie marathons on Sundays.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Erin: I like hanging out with my friends, playing with my dog, drawing, and occasionally I like to paint. I love watching Gossip Girl episodes with my mom. My mom watched one episode with me and became hooked instantly, now she won’t let me watch without her. I’m also super excited that Orange is the New Black’s new season finally came out, so I can start watching it.

Have you had a graphic design internship before?

Erin: No, but this one is wonderful. I am learning a lot and can complete projects at my own pace. Everyone here is really nice! Good vibes, good vibes.

What made you want to intern with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Erin: It’s been a part of my life since my dad started working here 7 years ago and I’ve learned a lot of about the company. It seems like a great place to work, so I thought I’d try it out and get some real-life graphic design experience.

What is your favorite part about interning at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® so far?

Erin: I have been creating graphics for one of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s fall cause marketing program, Movers for Mutts. I love working on those graphics because I love dogs and animals so much!

What are you looking to get out of this internship?

Erin: I’ve already learned so much since I started a few weeks ago. It’s especially nice getting such great graphic design experience.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Erin: In an ideal world, I’d win the lottery and then my future husband and I would travel the world. Realistically I’d like to work at a company that I can both photograph and create advertisements for —modeling or clothing companies.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

Erin: Hmm, I wish I could snap my fingers and have whatever food I wanted in front of me and not gain any weight or have any of the calories count after eating it! Oh, and I’d never get full.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be and why?

Erin: My Uncle Brub, because we used to hang out when I was little but he passed away. It’d be nice to talk to him now and catch up. We were always so close but I was young when he passed away. We would have so much to talk about!

Erin is super inspired and bubbly. She is a fantastic addition to the fun-loving marketing team. We can’t wait to see her creative ideas this summer for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®.

Interns Who Care – Derek Tubben

Written by Corinne DeVries

Meet Derek!

Derek1Derek grew up in Okemos, Mich., with his younger brother, Devon. Since he was little, Derek has played baseball and hockey. He graduated from Okemos High School in 2013 and will be a junior studying finance at Michigan State University this fall.

Tell me about yourself

Derek: I’m 20-years-old and have a younger brother, Devon, who is 18. He’ll be going to Grand Valley State University in the fall. Since we’re pretty close and just a few years apart in age, we’ll hang out with each other’s friends. I also have a dog, Ava. She can be a little wild sometimes. She likes to chase toys but she won’t fetch, and she has razor claws so you have to be careful when you’re playing with her. My family is pretty small, but close, so we spend a lot of time together. When my brother and I have school breaks, our family will go on vacations. My favorite so far was spring break my senior year in high school when we went to Cancun, Mexico.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Derek: I like to spend time with friends. I really enjoy being outside and being on the lake. I wouldn’t say I’m the camping type, I would try it, but I’m more of the fishing, playing water sports, or coming up with creative things to do, type of person.

Have you had an operations/logistics internship before?

Derek: No, actually this is my first real world, professional internship. So much better than making sandwiches at Jersey Giant or working at Meijer in the flower department!

What made you want to intern with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Derek: I’ve known the Sorber family for a long time –they are family friends. I have always heard good things about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, so when the opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t pass it up.

Derek2What is your favorite part about interning at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® so far?

Derek: The environment that Two Men has created makes it enjoyable to come to work each day. There is never a dull moment and each day you are doing something new. Everyone is extremely friendly and looks out for one another, so it’s almost like a huge family. I also enjoy the fact that they encourage team bonding and I feel like you get to know your co-workers on a professional and personal level.

What are you looking to get out of this internship?

Just learning as much as possible. Taking it all in and applying it to my future endeavors.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Somewhere warm working my first real job, hopefully making money to support myself and enjoy my life.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be? And why?

Morphing powers, I could morph anything including myself. So I could be anything and anyone I want. Make water separate so I could just walk across a lake. Fit everything I want in my suit case.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be and why?

JFK, because he’d have good stories and it’d be entertaining.

Derek truly is an asset to the operations and logistics team this summer. Derek’s finance experience and creative thinking brings a unique dynamic to the team.
